Photoswitchable Complexes: Properties and Applications — •Dominik Schaniel — I. Physikalisches Institut, Universität zu Köln
Photorefractive and photochromic materials are used in a variety of applications. This contribution reviews the properties and reports recent progress with respect to applications of unconventional photorefractive materials, based on photoswitchable complexes. Emphasis will be laid on compounds, in which ligands such as NO, NO2, SO2, and (CH3)2SO can be switched by light [1-3]. In these materials large photorefractive and photochromic responses can be induced on ultrashort timescales. The use of the complexes in various states of matter (liquid, solid, hybrid and nanomaterials) allows for tuning of the photorefractive/photochromic properties and thus paves the way for a targeted design of optical devices.
