We study semiclassically the energy-averaged correlator of two spectral determinants. While in the unitary case, the diagonal approximation is consistent with Random Matrix Theory (RMT) [1], we show that loop contributions evaluated in the same way as for ratios of determinants [2] are not in agreement with RMT. A complementary analysis based on a field-theoretical approach shows, that the additional terms occuring in semiclassics are cancelled in field theory by so-called curvature effects. Finally we show the semiclassical interpretation of these additional terms originating from periodic orbits surrounding other periodic orbits many times and also investigate the consistency with former semiclassical approaches, studying double sums over periodic (pseudo)-orbits.
