The dramatic situation in the semiconductor spintronic can be improved by the preparation of epitaxial ferromagnetic compounds on the basis of 3d metals and silicon or germanium grown on the corresponding semiconducting substrates. The Mn-based materials are most promising candidates because the Curie temperature of corresponding silicides or germanides can reach room temperature. Here we present a study of the electronic structure of high-quality well-characterized epitaxial ferromagnetic Mn5Ge3(0001) films on Ge(111) by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. Spin-polarization value of about +15% is measured with 21.2 eV photon energy at the Fermi level at 190 K. The experimental photoemission data is explained on the basis of available band structure calculations of ferromagnetic bulk Mn5Ge3.
