In metals the spin scattering is dominated by the Elliott-Yafet
mechanism. The electronic structure of the host and the perturbation of
the potential in the vicinity of the defects were calculated in the
framework of the density-functional theory
using a multiple scattering Green’s function Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker
scheme. Treating the spin-flip
transition matrix in Born approximation provides a good
agreement with conduction electron spin resonance experiments for Cu
containing different types of
substitutional non-magnetic impurities [1]. Nevertheless, this approach
neglects the spin-orbit interaction in the host and is not suitable for
materials which show spin hot
spots on the Fermi surface, like Al, Mg, and Be. To investigate such
systems, we calculated the electronic wave functions and the
solution of the impurity problem in the framework of the Dirac theory. First
results obtained for defects in Al are discussed.
