Thin films of π-conjugated organic molecules are of high relevance for organic semiconductor applications. A widely studied organic semiconductor is 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA). We applied non-contact atomic force microscopy in ultrahigh vacuum to investigate PTCDA deposited on Ag(111) by molecular beam epitaxy. Single PTCDA-molecules, arranged in the herringbone structure, were resolved in the topography scans. By site-specific force and dissipation versus distance measurements three-dimensional maps of tip-sample forces and dissipation with submolecular resolution were obtained. These maps are interpreted with respect to mechanical relaxation processes of the individual molecules.
