The charge carrier transport and recombination processes are important factors for the efficiency of organic bulk heterojunction solar cells. We study these mechanisms in poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT): [6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) photovoltaic devices, using the experimental techniques double injection current and plasma extraction. Both, the charge carrier mobility as well as the recombination rate can be determined simultaneously. We find that the major loss mechanism is due to nongeminate charge recombination, with at least second order decay rates. Our findings will be discussed in view of recent publications concerning bimolecular and trimolecular recombination.
