The effect of side chains on the photophysics of a series of low band-gap charge-transfer (CT) polymers derived from Poly[bis-N, N (4-octylphenyl)-bis-N,N-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine-alt-5,5' (4',7',-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3'-benzothiadiazole] T8TBT is presented. The CT nature of excitations is revealed by solvatochromic emission and long lived CT states observed in transient absorption experiments. The polymer with additional side chains shows a loss of planarity of the acceptor unit, causing a pronounced blue-shift and weakening of the CT absorption band. It also features blue-shifted emission and longer photoluminescence lifetimes. Furthermore performance in PCBM blended solar cells drops significantly.
