Comparison of surface functionalization of different polymers by means of an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) — •Katja Fricke, Antje Quade, Karsten Schröder, Thomas von Woedtke, and Klaus-Dieter Weltmann — INP Greifswald e.V., Felix-Hausdorff-Str. 2, 17489 Greifswald

Atmospheric-pressure nonequilibrium micro-plasma jets are used in a variety of applications related to surface treatment. Specifically, plasma based antimicrobial treatment of medical devices comprised of polymeric materials is of increasing interest. It is well known that plasmas can modify polymer surfaces chemically and topologically, leading to drastic changes of performance characteristics. For the case of antimicrobial treatment, a heavy plasma exposure is anticipated. Hence, detailed knowledge of surface modifications is mandatory. Process parameters, like power, gas flow conditions and material properties play a role in the appearance of the footprint of micro-plasma jets on the particular surface. Here, a systematization of these effects is tried. Results are presented for treatment of polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), and tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene (FEP) foil with an RF driven micro-plasma jet. Substrate distance and treatment time were systematically varied. The resulting radial dependence of the surface properties was characterized by XPS and contact angle measurements. The results imply a surprisingly low influence of a small oxygen admixture (1%) to the carrier gas (Ar). As expected, an increased incorporation of oxygen is observed for PE, whereas the same process causes less oxygen content on FEP foil as compared to operation with pure argon.
