Nearly 20 % of the world wide energy consumption is spent for lighting. The use of more efficient light sources like plasma lamps or LEDs offers therefore a huge possibility to save energy and natural resources. For decades plasma lamps as fluorescent or metal halide lamps have been established as high performance light sources for general lighting and also for the illumination in automotive headlights. They increasingly substitute the less bright and less efficient halogen incandescent lamps.
A main task of research in this field is the development of high efficient environment-friendly lamps. The replacement of toxic materials such as mercury in discharge lamps became a challenge and motivation for the development of new high pressure as well as low pressure lamps in recent years. For that purpose experiments and theoretical investigations were performed to understand the processes inside the lamps and to find optimized operation conditions for a high radiation output.
Fruitful cooperation with OSRAM and Neon Products in several projects as well as funding by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is kindly acknowledged.
