The recent discovery of 3D dust crystals [1], which allow precision measurements and direct observation of strong correlation phenomena, excited intensive experimental and theoretical activities [2,3]. The response of these systems to external excitations and also the melting behavior is described by the normal modes and the corresponding excitation spectra [4].
Here, we present a theoretical and experimental analysis of these normal modes of three-dimensional spherically confined Yukawa clusters with particular attention to the influence of dissipation on the mode spectra [5]. We investigate those spectra from a theoretical point of view, and give a quantitative comparison with experimental results. This allows for a sensitive diagnostics of relevant experimental parameters, including particle charge and trap frequency.
