Spatio-temporally resolved investigation of one-sided BD microdischarges — •Tomas Hoder, Ronny Brandenburg, Ralf Basner, and Klaus-Dieter Weltmann — INP Greifswald e.V.; F.-Hausdorff-Str. 2; 17489 Greifswald

Microdischarges in a so-called ”one-sided volume” barrier discharge (BD) in ambient air at atmospheric pressure have been investigated by means of cross-correlation spectroscopy and intensified high-speed CCD camera. The cross-correlation spectroscopy is also know as time-correlated single photon counting technique. The temporal resolution of presented measurements was 10 ps. Emission of the molecular bands of the first negative and second positive system of nitrogen has been recorded with high spatial resolution of 10 µm. Therefore, discharge events that occur very close to the metal electrode edge were resolved. In particular, at the metal cathode a relative long lasting emission just after the impact of the cathode directed ionizing wave was observed. This phenomenon was already pointed out in numerical modeling results and referred to as a transient cathode fall with thickness of some µm. The intensified CCD camera pictures revealed spatially 2D resolved structure of microdischarges reminding to glow discharges.

The mechanism and development of one-sided barrier microdischarges was found to be very similar to that of in so-called ”two-sided volume” BD. The influence of the presence of the metal surface in the discharge system is discussed.
