Sheared plasma rotation in stochastic magnetic fields — •Andreas Wingen and Karl-Heinz Spatschek — Theoretische Physik I, Universität Düsseldorf, D-40225 Düsseldorf
In this work we discuss the generation of sheared plasma flows by stochastic magnetic fields. Zonal flows are prominent examples of flow generation by nonlinearities in plasmas. They have been reported and analyzed for a long time in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. The interesting point in the present context is that a sheared plasma flow may be generated by controllable magnetic fluctuations as produced by ergodic divertor coils in tokamaks. Stochastic magnetic fields in incomplete chaos influence the drift motion of electrons and ions differently. Using a fast mapping technique, it is demonstrated how a sheared plasma rotation can be induced by the radial part of the ambipolar electric field. The results are applied to poloidal rotation profiles in magnetically confined plasmas. Scaling laws for plasma losses and the onset of sheared plasma rotation are presented.
