The intergalactic medium and its role in galaxy evolution — •Philipp Richter — Universität Potsdam, Institut für Physik und Astronomie, Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 24/25, 14476 Potsdam
In this talk I will discuss the properties of the intergalactic medium, an extremely thin plasma filling out the space in-between galaxies. The intergalactic medium hosts by far most of the baryonic matter in the Universe in the form of a filamentary network of highly-ionized gaseous structures. The role of this gaseous matter component in the evolution of galaxies will be outlined and the most recent scientific results will be reviewed.
