Sterilization is a key technology in the medical industry. Standard sterilization methods such as heat treatment or exposure to toxic chemicals have in common that they impose a severe stress on the objects to be decontaminated: the wear of surgical instruments is significant and implants made from thermolabile polymers loose their mechanical integrity. One technology that avoids these issues is plasma sterilisation. In plasma, reactive species such as electrons, ions, radicals and UV photons are interacting with the biological system. The object itself stays at moderate temperatures since the dissociation of the gas is initiated in the plasma. The mechanisms of plasma inactivation are studied in the European project BIODECON (www.rub.de/biodecon). This project brings together an ideal trans-disciplinary mix of expertise in plasma physics, microbiology and commercial production. The overview of main research areas and results will be given.
