Development Status of the PAL High Current Pseudospark Switches — •Sang Hoon Nam — Pohang Accelerator Laboratory/POSTECH, Korea

The Pohang accelerator laboratory (PAL) in Pohang, Korea was involved in development of pseudospark switches for high current applications over 100 kA with long pulse duration of several ms. Several different types of pseudospark switch were tested. The main investigated characteristics of the pseudospark switches were hold-off voltages, energy losses, recovery times, and electrode erosions, considering several conditions such as electrode materials, electrode structure, electrode surface treatment, filling gas pressure, and vacuum electrode conditioning for pretreatments of the virgin electrodes. Reliability of the switches was also concerned for the switch design. In this presentation, previous activities and future plans of the pseudospark switch development in the PAL will be discussed.
