Laser-Microwave Double-Resonance Spectroscopy in a Penning Trap for g-Factor Measurements in Highly Charged Ions — Nicolaas Petrus Marcus Brantjes1, •David von Lindenfels2, Wolfgang Quint1, and Manuel Vogel3 — 1GSI, Darmstadt, Germany — 2University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany — 3Imperial College, London, United Kingdom
Precise determination of bound-electron g-factors in heavy highly-charged ions (e.g. Bi82+, U91+) provides a stringent test of bound-state QED in extreme fields. The H-like and Li-like heavy ions, produced at GSI and slowed down at the HITRAP facility, will be loaded into a half-open cylindrical Penning trap and confined at cryogenic temperatures. With a laser-microwave double-resonance technique we can then probe microwave transitions between Zeeman sub-levels of the hyperfine structure in such ions. From this the ionic g-factors gF can be measured with high accuracy. Both the electronic g-factor gJ and the nuclear g-factor gI can be determined from a single experiment. This experiment will be a novel method to measure the g-factor of the bound electron.
