Spectrum of the Free-Electron Laser — •Paul Preiss and Wolfgang P. Schleich — Institut für Quantenphysik, Universität Ulm, D-89069 Ulm, Germany
The free-electron laser (FEL) is an alternative laser device with a widely tunable wavelength of the emitted radiation. Most FEL’s operate in the regime of classical physics where quantum physical descriptions are not needed. We discuss the spectrum of FEL’s operating at the border line of the quantum mechanical regime by a treatment via quantum mechanics.
