Eddies and the large scale circulation of the ocean — •Richard Greatbatch — Leibniz-Institut für Meereswissenschaften, Kiel, Germany

The ocean is populated by mesoscale eddies of scales of 10-100 km. Eddies drive circulation and can contribute to mixing in the ocean. Fundamental mechanisms associated with eddy-driven flows and mixing will be discussed.
