We present the prospects for a top mass measurement via the template method in the tt→ lepton+jets channel with first ATLAS data.
The template method uses probability density functions (PDFs) for signal and background in an un-binned likelihood fit to the reconstructed hadronic top mass to infer the top-quark mass, mtop. In this work, event yields and kinematical distributions are obtained from simulated Monte Carlo samples of the tt, single top and W+jets processes, for a proton-proton center-of-mass energy of 10 TeV. PDFs are determined for signal as a function of mtop, and for background events by fitting a functional form from the corresponding reconstructed hadronic top mass distributions (templates). The procedure is calibrated using Monte Carlo tt simulated events, generated at different mtop values around the present experimental measurement.
Simulated data ensembles (pseudo-experiments) are explored to check the fitting procedure for possible systematic biases, and to estimate the expected statistical and systematic uncertainty on the top mass measurement under different integrated luminosity assumptions.
