Studies of Rare Di-muon B Decays at the ATLAS Experiment — •Valentin Sipica, Peter Buchholz, and Wolfgang Walkowiak — Universität Siegen, Fachbereich Physik
Bs0 → µ+µ− and Bd0 → µ+µ− decays are allowed in the Standard Model only through one loop penguin or box diagrams, which are very sensitive to Standard Model extensions. Therefore, they are an excellent probe of New Physics effects. The LHC will be an abundant source of B mesons, allowing for the first time the measurement of branching ratios for such decays in similar order as the Standard Model predictions (BR ∼ 10−10 for Bd0 → µ+µ− and ∼ 10−9 for Bs0 → µ+µ−).
The strategy for the search of the Bs0 → µ+µ− decay is presented, with the focus on a cut based analysis. Variables introduced in order to separate signal from background events are discussed and preliminary results are presented using simulated data.
