Software for statistical studies and limit calculation with ROOT and applications to Higgs analyses — •Danilo Piparo, Günter Quast, and Grégory Schott — Institut für Experimentelle Kernphysik, Universität Karlsruhe

We will present software developments based on the RooFit technology (RooStatsCms and RooStats), whose scope is the modelling and combination of analyses together with statistical studies in terms of limits calculations, significance estimation and hypotheses separation. That is performed through methods described in the literature and implemented in classes (Profile Likelihood, hybrid frequentist, Feldman-Cousins).

The classes design is oriented to the execution of cpu intensive jobs on batch systems or on the grid. In addition the plots production by means of formatting and graphics routines is possible. Analyses and their combinations are characterised in configuration files (datacards) thus separating Physics inputs from C++ code. This feature allows the sharing of the input models among the analysis groups establishing common guidelines to summarise Physics results. The definition in the datacard of common variables, constrained parameters and arbitrary correlations among the different quantities is possible.

This tool is therefore also meant to complement the existing analyses by means of their combination therewith obtaining earlier discoveries, sharper limits and more refined measurements of physically relevant quantities.
