Data-driven background estimation for Higgs boson search in the H → WW decay channel with the ATLAS detector — Sandra Horvat, Steffen Kaiser, Oliver Kortner, •Sergey Kotov, and Hubert Kroha — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik, München
The Standard Model Higgs boson decay mode H → WW is a possible discovery channel in the Higgs boson mass range between 140 GeV and 190 GeV. Due to the similarity of the shapes of the transverse mass distributions for signal and background events it is crucial for the analysis to estimate the background normalization and shape with the smallest possible uncertainty. We employ data-driven methods for the estimation of the tt and W+jets background contributions. The expected performance of these methods and their impact on the signal significance are studied.
