Status of the forward calorimeter CASTOR of the CMS experiment — •Niladri Sen, Ulf Behrens, Kerstin Borras, Alan Campbell, Peter Göttlicher, Hannes Jung, Igor Katkov, Albert Knutsson, and Ekaterina Kuznetsova — Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), Notkestraße 85, 22607 Hamburg

The CASTOR calorimeter is a forward (5.1 < η < 6.6) Čerenkov quartz-tungsten sampling calorimeter for the CMS experiment at the LHC. The CASTOR calorimeter consists of an electromagnetic and a hadronic section, with successive layers of tungsten plates as absorber and fused silica quartz plates as active material. The Čerenkov light produced by the incoming charged particles is collected in reading units along the depth of the calorimeter and transported to PMTs by air-core light-guides. The calorimeter will contribute to physics topics like low-x parton dynamics, minimum bias event structure, diffraction, cosmic ray related physics in proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions. We present the general status of the CASTOR calorimeter project.
