Performance studies of the full lenght prototype for the CASTOR forward calorimeter of the CMS experiment — •Igor Katkov, Ulf Behrens, Kerstin Borras, Alan Campbell, Peter Göttlicher, Hannes Jung, Albert Knutsson, and Ekaterina Kuznetsova — Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), Notkestraße 85, 22607 Hamburg

CASTOR is a project of a forward Čerenkov sampling calorimeter for the CMS experiment at the LHC. It is constructed with quartz plates as active medium and tungsten as absorber. Three prototypes of the calorimeter have been constructed and tested at CERN in the past years. In summer 2008 data with an optimized design, chosen PMT’s and final front-end electronics have be taken with a full-lenght octant (10 hadronic interaction length) at the CERN SPS machine. Very low beam energies below 10 GeV were among the highlights of the test beam program. Results from these test beam measurements are reported here.
