The Timepix detector enhances the features of previous detectors of the Medipix family by offering the possibility to determine the event time which is defined as the time when the preamplifier output pulse exceeds the detector threshold energy.

We have evaluated the Timepix detector in a Hybrid Photon Detector (HPD) set-up for the detection of optical photon signals. Possible applications include Cherenkov detectors in astroparticle physics.

Electrons released from a photo-cathode under illumination with UV light were accelerated in an electric field to gain energies of up to 20 keV and detected with the Timepix detector. The time-walk due to charge-sharing among neighboring pixels reduces the time resolution. In our experiments with 100 MHz clock frequency, an intrinsic time resolution of 10 ns is achieved when considering only single-pixel clusters in the data. The spatial resolution in the experiment is governed by the point-spread function of the proximity-focussed electric field configuration.

The data are compared to GEANT4 simulations of the detector response yielding very good agreement.
