Electron-tau separation for the ATLAS experiment and its validation using Z bosons — •Asen Christov, Sascha Caron, and Gregor Herten — Physics Department, Freiburg University
Many physics studies, planed to be performed with the ATLAS experiment, rely on tau leptons. The special properties of the taus often promote these leptons to be the crucial ingredients of different analyses. At the same time the properties of the tau leptons make their reconstruction and identification more complicated than for electrons and muons.
In this talk we present an electron-tau separation algorithm, based on a one-dimensional likelihood discriminator method. This algorithm was developed and tested using "monte carlo" simulation. We will also propose a method for testing its performance on real physics data. We plan to select events containing the Z boson decay into two electrons and apply a "tag and probe" method.
