Measuring tau identification efficiency with tt events in early data — •Debra Lumb, Sascha Caron, and Xavier Portell — Physikalisches Institut, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, Freiburg

The ATLAS experiment at the LHC will begin data taking in 2009. Taus play an important role in the physics expected at the LHC both in Standard Model and beyond the Standard Model processes. Due to their prompt decay, taus are challenging objects to identify, but the excellent tracking and calorimetry of the ATLAS detector should allow for efficient identification and reconstruction of hadronically decaying taus. The validation of the ATLAS tau identification will be important in early data. Here we present a method for determining the tau identification efficiency using tt decays, which will be abundant at the LHC. This method offers good control of multijet QCD background and does not require the tau trigger or b-tagging, making it a good method for early data.
