Simulations of beam dynamics for the superconducting synchrotron SIS300 at FAIR — •Angela Saa Hernandez — GSI, Darmstadt, Germany

With ability to accelerate ions up to energy of 32 GeV/u, the SIS300 synchrotron will be the core of the new FAIR facility at GSI-Darmstadt. The synchrotron will allow for a 20-fold increase in operating energy and 100-10000 times higher intensities, depending on the experiment.

The accelerating scheme will consist of an upgraded LINAC plus the SIS18 working as a booster for the two concentric synchrotrons called SIS100 and SIS300. SIS300, providing a 300 Tm magnetic rigidity, will accelerate different ions species at ramping rates as high as 1 T/s. The resulting eddy currents (inter-strand, inter-filament and persistent currents) are the main practical limitation for operation of superconducting magnets at high ramping rates and long slow extraction plateaus due to the worsening of the field quality. Therefore, proper correction schemes must be foreseen. In order to address this issue, detailed simulations of the beam dynamics for a variety of experimental requirements have been performed. In particular, third order resonant slow extraction will be presented in this communication, including working point optimization, chromaticity correction and dynamic aperture studies.
