Polarization studies of the radio emission generated by cosmic ray air showers in the atmosphere with the LOPES experiment — •Paula Gina Isar — Forschunszentrum Karlsruhe, Institut fuer Kernphysik, Deutschland
Cosmic ray air showers are cascades of relativistic particles generated in the Earth’s atmosphere. At the interaction with the Earth’s magnetic field, the charged particles (mainly electrons and positrons) are deflected, and therefore, generate short pulsed radio signals via the proposed geo-synchrotron effect. LOPES experiment is an array of dipole radio antennas designed to detect such radio signals in the frequency range between 40 - 80 MHz. LOPES is localized in the area of KASCADE - Grande providing trigger and shower information for primary energies in the range of 1016 - 1018 eV. For recording the full radio signal, the LOPES antennas are oriented to measure both, the east-west and north-south polarization directions of the electric field. Polarization studies of the cosmic ray air showers radio emission will be reported.
