When high energy particles of cosmic radiation interact with the Earth's atmosphere, extensive air showers (EAS) are generated. The electromagnetic and the muonic component of EAS are registered with the detectors of the KASCADE-Grande experiment. The particle density in the plane normal to the shower axis is relevant for the shower reconstruction. Usually the particle density in the normal plane is assumed to possess axial symmetry. Due to geometrical effects, to shower evolution and to the magnetic field, the density in the observation plane presents an asymmetric distribution. Commonly used methods to obtain the density in the normal plane from the measured density do not restore azimuthal symmetry. In this work the asymmetry of the density in the normal plane is investigated, including its dependence on the type of secondary particle, on the shower angle of incidence and on the radial distance from the shower axis. Methods to correct the asymmetry are proposed, tested and applied to shower reconstruction.
