Two of the major puzzles of modern comsology are the nature of dark energy and dark matter. In this contribution we consider the hypothesis that dark energy and dark matter could be different manifestations, observed at different scales, of the same substance, the unifying dark matter or quartessence. We shall show some recent results of this class of models in the context of structure formation process in the universe.
