ω-meson production in pp collisions was measured by HADES for the first time at (s)1/=3.18 GeV. During 20 days of beam time a total of 1.23×109 events were collected. In the analysis we have selected pp→ ppπ+π−π0 events by making use of particle identification for the protons and charged pions, a selection on the missing mass to identify the π0 and – in addition – a kinematic refit to improve the resolution and reduce the background.
The number of ω-mesons which have been reconstructed is about 76,000. This large number allows for the determination of both the production cross section and angular distribution. The determined exclusive cross section in the order of 102µb is in agreement with existing data and theoretical calculations based on one boson exchange models.
Using the same data set, the inclusive cross section for ω-production in the reaction pp→ω X→ e+e−X has been measured for the first time and is of the order of 2×102µb.
