The identification of open charm particles at the CBM Experiment (FAIR) requires a fast Micro Vertex Detector with an excellent spatial resolution, high radiation tolerance and minimal material budget.
As a first step towards the CBM-MVD a demonstrator has been designed and built which integrates the technologies nowadays available regarding sensor, support, cooling and read-out.
The Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MIMOSA-20-sensors, developed at IPHC Strasbourg) are mounted on a support consisting of a Thermal Pyrolytic Graphite/Reticulated Vitreous Carbon-Sandwich. The read-out is done by a customized flex print cable and readout boards. The real time data acquisition and a ROOT-based analysis software was developed and tested in the lab. A beam time at the CERN SPS with 120 GeV Pions was accomplished to test the MVD Demonstrator as a Device under test in a reference telescope under real conditions. This contribution emphasizes the technical realization of this project, and presents the in-beam performance of the device. *supported by BMBF (06FY173I, 06FY9099I), GSI F&E
