Microchannel-plate detectors are widely used in physics experiments. One of the most important factors of these detectors is the timing performance of the produced signal that limits the performance of the experiment, for example in mass spectrometry the mass resolution of time-of-flight mass spectrometers.
A microchannel-plate detector with a sub-nanosecond peak width has been developed. Electronics for amplification and splitting of the sub-nanosecond signals have also been developed. Specifically, an RF amplifier of 2.4 GHz bandwidth (-3 dB bandwidth) with flat (± 2.5 dB) and variable gain of typical 20 dB and a resistive power splitter of 5 GHz bandwidth have been developed.
These developments will be employed for a time-of-flight detector used for storage ring mass spectrometry and result in improved mass measurements accuracy.
