Measurements of the Response Characteristics of CsI-Crystals from the WASA Spectrometer — Markus Büscher1, Guido D'Orsaneo1, Frank Goldenbaum1, •Jona Hampe1, Christian Pauly1, Thomas Sefzick1, Hans Ströher1, Achim Stahl2, and Patrick Wurm1 — 1IKP and JCHP, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany — 2III. Physikalisches Institut, RWTH Aachen, Germany
The Wide Angle Shower Apparatus (WASA), being operated at the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) of the Forschungszentrum Jülich, is used to study the decay of light mesons ranging into the strange quark sector. A central part of WASA is its electromagnetic calorimeter, which consists of 1012 sodium doped CsI-crystals. Detailed studies concerning the energy resolution of the crystals are carried out to optimize the overall calorimeter resolution. Seven CsI-crystals have been arranged in a 2-3-2 matrix and have been equipped with light guides and photomultipliers as they are used in WASA spectrometer. First measurements with cosmic particles and radioactive sources have been accomplished. Additional measurements with protons provided by the Jülich Isochronous Cyclotron (JULIC) as well as with tagged photons from the Mainzer Mikrotron (MAMI) are being realized.
