Thermal neutron distributions at temperatures around 30 keV are relevant to investigate the breeding of elements via the s- process in red giant stars. Moreover, this energy spectrum is of interest for material development. Moreover, radiation hardness tests at neutron fluxes of around 10E8 per square cm and s can be performed for central detector components like the Si -pixel - detectors of CBM - FAIR. The possibility of n -tomography with beam parameters provided by FRANZ might also become an attractive research activity. FRANZ will have two experimental areas. Area1 will provide 1 ns short pulses at rep. rates of up to 250 kHz and at peak proton currents of up to several Amperes! For differential n- capture measurements after a TOF distance of 0.8 m between production target and sample the Karlsruhe BaF2 - Gamma calorimeter will be reused. Area2 will provide n - activation positions rather close to the production target driven by a cw p - beam in this case. The novel concept of producing extremely intense, low energy p - bunches at 250 kHz rep. rate as well as the compact 2 MeV, 200 mA p - linac, the production target developments and the project status will be reported.
