Performance of High-Rate TRD Prototypes for the CBM Experiment in Source Tests and Simulation — •Cyrano Bergmann — Institut für Kernphysik, Münster

The goal of the future Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future FAIR accelerator is to explore the QCD phase diagram in the region of highest net-baryon densities. Due to the high beam intensities being available at FAIR, rare probes such as charm production and dileptons become accessible for the first time in Au+Au collisions from 8-35 AGeV beam energy. Among other detectors, CBM will employ a Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) for tracking of charged particles and electron identification necessary for the investigation of di-electrons. In order to meet the demands for tracking and for electron identification at large particle densities and very high interaction rates, a novel concept of TRD detectors with double-sided pad planes and thus two gas volumes for better TR conversion has been developed. Real size prototypes have been developed with double-sided triangular pad plane electrodes based on Multiwire Proportional Chambers (MWPC). They have been tested at NIHAM, Bucharest, Romania. Results of the performance in a test using an 55Fe and a collimated 238Pu source, and in simulations will be shown.
