open charm production using D*+ → D0 π+ decay in ALICE — •Yifei Wang — Physikalisches Institut, Heidelberg, Germany
Heavy quarks(c, b), due to their large mass, are unique tools to study the degree of thermalizaiton of the initially created matter in high energy nuclear collisions at LHC. Their masses stay heavy, even if chiral symmetry is restored in QGP. Furthermore, theoretical predictions of heavy-quark production have large uncertainties due to the poorly known parton distributions in the low Bjorken-x region relevant for LHC energies.
We present the status of detailed Monte Carlo studies of the open charm resonance D*+ → D0 π+ (BR:68%) production in p+p collisions at 10 TeV center of mass energy with the ALICE detector. D0 mesons are reconstructed via the channel D0 → K− π+ (BR: 4%). Special emphasis is given to the reconstruction of the soft pion in the D*+ decay. If data from pp collisions becomes available, we show first calibration results of soft pion reconstruction with ALICE.
