Parton and flavor discrimination using jets with ALICE at the LHC — •Hermes León-Vargas — Institut für Kernphysik Frankfurt

Jet physics allows the experimental study of partonic interactions. The study of the cross sections of its different components is an important test of perturbative QCD. During its early operation, the LHC will produce proton-proton collisions that will provide a benchmark for the study of the properties of the hot and dense matter produced during heavy ion collisions. Using the excellent tracking and PID capabilities of the ALICE experiment it is possible to use a combination of different tagging variables to disentangle jets produced by quarks or gluons, and even the jets produced by heavy or light quarks. With this we could be able to compare the properties, such as energy loss, of the partons produced in the vacuum with those that traverse the matter produced in heavy ion collisions.

The first results from a study of different methods to identify jets produced by quark or gluon fragmentation are presented. The study has been developed on Pythia Monte Carlo jet events using the UA1 jet finder algorithm. The jet-parton identification method is based on the properties of the tracks related to the jet. The results of applying cuts on these properties to select quark, gluon and heavy flavor jets are presented.
