The Formation of Planets — •Wilhelm Kley — Universität Tübingen
In 1993 the first extrasolar planet (51 Peg) orbiting another solar type star has been discovered. Since then the number has increased to over 400 by today. The surprising properties of the newly discovered worlds required a revision of the standard theory of planet formation. In the talk I will discuss the two main formation scenarios (sequential accretion vs. gravitational instability) in the context of the whole ensemble of extrasolar planets. The necessity of dynamical evolution of young planets in the disc will be emphasized and new results will be discussed.
