Muon Production Height and Longitudinal Shower Development in KASCADE-Grande — •Paul Doll1, Kai Daumiller1, Pawel Luczak2 und Janusz Zabierowski21IK, Karlsruhe Institut of Technology(KIT), 76021 Karlsruhe — 2Soltan Institute for Nuclear Studies, 90950 Lodz, Poland

The Muon Tracking Detector(MTD) in the KASCADE-Grande experiment allows to study the angular correlation of muon tracks to the shower axis. Besides the investigation of the muon pseudorapidity (see P. Luczak et al. in this session) the muon production height allows an almost model independent investigation of the mass composition of the cosmic ray flux. Additional information comes from the muon multiplicity. Compared to the simulation results for proton and iron primaries (CORSIKA, QGSjet-II and FLUKA 2002.4) excess of muons in the simulations in the region of the first or second interaction may indicate that produced muons there have too high energy and do not decay. Those muons missing in the data have also large pseudorapidity and this deficit is also seen in the experimental muon pseudorapidity distributions.

This work was supported in part by the German-Polish bilateral collaboration grant (PPP-DAAD/MNiSW) for the years 2009-2010.
