Flavor Symmetry and Its Breaking from an Orbifold GUT — •Adisorn Adulpravitchai1 and Michael A. Schmidt2 — 1Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Heidelberg, Germany — 2Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology, University of Durham, Durham, United Kingdom
Orbifold grand unified theories (GUTs) solve several problems in GUT model building. Therefore, it is intriguing to investigate similar constructions in the flavor context. In this letter, we propose that a flavor symmetry emerges due to the orbifold compactification and is broken by the boundary conditions of the orbifold simultaneously. The combination of the orbifold parities in the gauge and flavor space determines the zero modes. We demonstrate the construction in a 6d supersymmetric SO(10)× S4 orbifold GUT model.
