Top pair production cross section in the lepton+jets channel at ATLAS using b-tagging algorithms designed for early data — Markus Cristinziani, Gia Khoriauli, Marc Lehmacher, •Agnieszka Leyko, Gizo Nanava, Tatevik Poghosyan, Nina Scislak, Duc Bao Ta, and Nikolai Vlasov — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Bonn
The Large Hadron Collider is scheduled to start high-energy collisions in the first months of 2010, at lower center-of-mass energies than the designed √s=14 TeV. Consequently the anticipated signal-to-background ratio will be reduced and additional efforts need to be made in order to “rediscover” the top quark in the lepton+jets final state. Therefore complementary approaches to the baseline cut-and-count analysis are explored. In particular the usage of b-tagging algorithms designed for early data is studied, as a possible tool to further suppress background or as an alternative to the missing transverse energy cut.
