Studies of b-tagging algorithms in the context of top quark mass measurements with the ATLAS detector — •Stefan Guindon, Kevin Kröninger, and Arnulf Quadt — II. Physikalisches Institut, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen
The top quark mass measurement is an important test of the Standard Model. In this study, we present studies of b-tagging algorithms used in such top quark mass measurements with the ATLAS detector. A kinematic likelihood fitter is used to extract an estimator of the top quark mass on an event-by-event basis by reconstructing which jets match the decay products of the top quark decay. Using b-tagging information, the identification of b-jets can improve the efficiency of properly reconstructing the top quark decay and thus improve the top quark mass estimator. The distribution of reconstructed top quark masses is then compared to different mass templates in order to extract the mass of the top quark. The templates used were generated with different top quark pole masses and include W + jets events as background. An estimate of the expected statistical and systematic uncertainties can be obtained using ensemble tests.
