Signatures of Relativistic Magnetic Monopoles im Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes — •Gerrit Spengler and Ullrich Schwanke — Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, Germany
Magnetic monopoles are considered to be one of the most amazing aspects of modern physics. Starting with Dirac's famous 1931 paper on the possible existence of magnetic monopoles as an extension of Maxwells equations in the context of Quantum Mechanics, sophisticated experiments for the detection of isolated magnetic charges have been designed and interesting theoretical predictions, especially in the context of Grand Unifying Theories have been made. This talk will discuss the sensitivity of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes to magnetic monopoles. The focus will be on the generation of monopole Monte Carlo data for the H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) experiment and a proposition for an analysis technique for the same experiment. A discussion of the prospects of upcoming Imagiging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope experiments will conclude the talk.
