Beta induced x-ray spectroscopy for a precise measurement of the column density of a gaseous Tritium source — •Markus Steidl and Detlef Maurel — Karlsruher Institut für Technology, Institut für Kernphysik

Beta induced x-ray spectroscopy is a non-destructive method which can be applied to monitor in-situ and in real time activity fluctuations of a gaseous Tritium source. We examine via simulations the energy spectra and intensities of Bremsstrahlungs- and fluorescence rays for a silicon detector, which is positioned behind a graphite substrate with Au coverage inside a gaseous Tritium source. The simulation code is adapted to the the reference design of the windowless gaseous Tritium source (WGTS) of the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino Experiment KATRIN. The simulation code PENELOPE is used for the production of x-rays and its transport from the substrate to the detector. It is validated with a dedicated test experiment using quasi-monoenergetic electrons being shot on different targets in the energy range of 2-20 keV. We report on the experimental results of the validation experiment and present on base of the findings a reference design to monitor the KATRIN source intensity with 0.1% precision.
