The online event selection of the ATLAS experiment is centrally controlled by the Configuration System of the trigger. This system, which was sucessfully used during the first pp runs, holds and records the full configuration information of all three trigger levels at a centrally maintained location and provides fast access to consistent configuration information of the online trigger system for the purpose of data taking as well as to all parts of the offline trigger simulation. In addition to the online system, tools for flexible browsing and manipulation of trigger configurations, and for their distribution across the ATLAS reconstruction sites have been developed. The most important information stored is the Trigger Menu, describing the physics selection of the experiment. The Trigger Menu has been carefully optimised to cover the physics goals of the experiment in an ideal way. In this talk we introduce the technical design of the configuration system and present the operation experience obtained in standalone runs, cosmics data taking and first collision runs. Furthermore, the composition of the ATLAS trigger menu is discussed and first results from early data-taking are reported.
