The computing resources needed to analyze the enormous amount of data expected to be generated by the LHC are distributed around the world. To efficiently make use of the available resources the ATLAS collaboration decided to follow a hierarchical model in which grid computing is used extensively for data analysis and distribution. In the ATLAS computing model, grids are subdivided into so-called clouds in which smaller computing centers (Tier-2/3) are grouped in a tiered organizational structure around a larger regional computing site (Tier-1). The German cloud is grouped around the Tier-1 center at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (GridKa). The cloud consists of twelve Tier-2 centers located in Germany, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. Key activities of the Tier-2 centers are the production of simulated data as well as distributed data analysis. The talk will discuss different aspects of the cloud operations with a focus on the Tier-2 sites. Procedures and tools developed to ensure a stable operation of the distributed data management are also detailed.
