Other ways to make polarized antiproton beams — •Kurt Kilian, Dieter Grzonka, and Walter Oelert — IKP, Forschungszentrum Jülich, 52425 Jülich, Germany
The preparation of polarized antiproton beams by the filter method as proposed for future experiments at FAIR depletes one spin component of a stored beam due to an assumed spin dependent interaction. An increase of polarisation degree goes on the expense of intensity.
Alternative methods to prepare polarized beams could be the antiproton production mechanism itself or the use of antiprotons from Λ decay.
In the usual hadronic quasifree production p + N → p + 3N, the antiprotons may have substantial polarization if collected at finite angles. Experimentally the possibily has never been studied and theoretical predictions are missing. Problematic may be depolarization during precooling of the p in the collector synchrotron.
In the Λ production via p + p → ΛΛ the hyperons are strongly polarized and decay into strongly polarized p and p. In the PS185 experiment - a full acceptance geometry spectrometer - at LEAR the feasibilty of experiments with polarized antiprotons via Λ production has been demonstrated. With the expected antiproton flux at FAIR this method will certainly work in kinematic regions defined by the source reaction.
