Top-Down Reconstruction of Muon Energies in IceCube — •Matthias Schunck, David Boersma, Jan-Patrick Hülß, and Christopher Wiebusch — III. Physikalisches Institut, RWTH Aachen, D-52056 Aachen
The conventional energy reconstruction of IceCube events compares event observables with the average expectation for different energies and maximizes the probability. The comparison utilizes idealizations of the Cherenkov light generation and propagation, and of the detector response. A complementary approach is based on the direct comparison of a measured event with simulated events on detector level. Using a suitable set of observables the algorithm finds a set of simulated events which best agree with the considered event. This Top-Down reconstruction requires a large amount of computing resources. It is therefore primarily used to improve the reconstruction of a given sub-sample of interesting events. This talk describes the current implementation of this algorithm and first results of its application to neutrino events in IceCube.
